This was my first time using Prestige. I noticed their truck on the road and there was enough info as to what they do printed on the truck to satisfy what was looking for. I called and they sent a very nice gentleman (owner) and we discussed my repair job and came to a reasonable price. Was told 2- 4 weeks and they were ready within that promised time. They called and we agreed to a time and day to do the job. Their men were very respectful of my house and property and did the job quickly and neatly to my 100% satisfaction. I definitely will call them again for my window and door work in the future!

Wood Window and Door Repair in Connecticut

Wood windows and doors are among the most maintenance-intensive components in any home. When they are working correctly (sashes moving smoothly, frames tight against the weatherstrip, paint holding against the season changes), they perform better than anything vinyl or composite can match for thermal mass and character. When they are not, the deterioration accelerates quickly. A minor checking in the sill paint that goes unaddressed for one Connecticut winter becomes a rot pocket by spring. A casement frame swollen shut in July is already absorbing moisture at the joints.

Prestige Window and Door Repair has been working on wood windows and doors across Connecticut and Westchester County since 2014. Over more than a decade, the patterns we see are consistent: the same failure modes, in the same locations, caused by the same combination of climate conditions and deferred maintenance. Here's common wood window and door problems we repair in CT and Westchester.
Rotted Frames and Sills
Lower frame corners and horizontal sill faces are where rot starts in nearly every case. Water runs down the glass, collects at the sill-to-jamb junction, and enters the end grain once the paint seal breaks down. Fairfield County's freeze-thaw cycling does the rest — water in a small crack expands when it freezes, widening the opening for the next rain event. We remove all deteriorated wood to sound material, treat with borate fungicide, and rebuild using epoxy filler, Dutchman repair, or both. See our rotten window repair service for the full scope.
Swollen or Stuck Frames
Connecticut's summers are genuinely humid - Fairfield County regularly sits above 70% relative humidity from June through August. A casement that opened easily in March can be completely immovable by July, not because anything broke but because the wood has absorbed enough moisture to close its operating clearances. The solution is never force. We identify where the binding is occurring, plane or adjust the sash to restore clearance, and seal the exposed wood so the same problem does not repeat the following summer. Our window adjustment service covers all wood window types.
Deteriorated Glazing and Failing Paint
In wood windows installed before the 1990s, which describes much of the housing stock in Greenwich, Darien, and New Canaan — the original oil-based glazing compound has been through 30 to 50 Connecticut winters. It fails gradually: hairline cracks first, then the compound pulls from the glass edge, then moisture enters the void and begins working on the wood beneath. Repointing the glazing prevents a much more expensive rot repair later. Our window reglazing service covers single-pane and divided-light sashes across all ages and configurations.

Why Repair Rather Than Replace

Cost — Window replacement in Connecticut and Westchester runs significantly higher than most homeowners expect. A professional wood window repair like rot removal, frame rebuild, reglazing, adjustment is completed at a fraction of the cost of sourcing and installing a replacement unit, and in most cases extends the window's service life by a decade or more.

Material quality — Wood windows in homes built before 1980 were manufactured from old-growth timber, they are denser, more rot-resistant, and more dimensionally stable than the wood available today. When we repair one of these windows, we are working with material that modern replacement windows cannot replicate. Replacing a pre-1980 Andersen or Marvin wood window with a contemporary equivalent often means accepting lower material quality in a new frame.

Historic and deed-restricted properties — A significant number of properties in Greenwich, New Canaan, and throughout Westchester County are either in historic districts or carry deed restrictions that require preservation of original window configurations. For these properties, repair is not just the preferred option, it is often the only permitted one. Our historic window and door restoration service covers the full scope of preservation-standard work.

Energy performance — A wood window with properly maintained glazing compound, a fresh perimeter caulk seal, and correctly fitted weatherstripping performs at a thermal level comparable to a modern replacement unit. The gap is not in the window itself, it is in the maintenance. Our window recaulking service is typically part of any complete wood window restoration.

When replacement is the right answer — If rot has spread structurally through multiple frame members, if the sash cannot be salvaged, or if the window is already a non-original replacement with no heritage value, we will say so directly. There is no benefit to selling a repair that will not last.

Wood Window Diagnostics

Wood window repair in Connecticut starts with diagnosis, not a quote. The visible problem (soft corner, stuck sash, peeling paint) is rarely the full picture. Moisture moves through wood frames in ways that are not obvious from outside, and a sill that looks fine may have been wet underneath for two seasons. Every job across Fairfield County and Westchester begins with a full frame assessment. That is what separates a lasting repair from one that treats the symptom and leaves the cause in place.

Repair Sequence Matters

Reglazing a window with a failed perimeter caulk seal is a short-term fix. Moisture will re-enter through the wall junction and begin working on the wood regardless of how well the new glazing compound is applied. The correct sequence is always: find and close the moisture entry point first, then address the surface damage. This is why we assess the window recaulking condition and the window reglazing condition together rather than quoting them as separate jobs. In most cases both need attention, and doing them in the right order is what makes the repair durable.

Repair VS Replacement

Not every wood window is worth restoring. If rot has spread through multiple structural frame members or the sash joints have failed beyond cost-effective repair, replacement is the honest recommendation, and we make that call at the estimate visit. For properties where original windows must be retained, our historic window and door restoration service covers the full preservation-standard scope.

Why Prestige

Prestige Window and Door Repair has been working on wood windows and doors across Connecticut and Westchester County since 2014. Over more than a decade and 6,000+ completed projects, the team has developed a repair-first approach that is grounded in what the housing stock in this region actually requires, not what is easiest to quote. We carry a 10-year warranty on all glass unit installations and a 5-year workmanship warranty on all structural repairs, because work done correctly does not need an escape clause. Our 4.9-star rating across 570+ Google reviews reflects what happens when diagnostics come before proposals and honest assessments come before sales pitches.
What separates a wood window specialist from a general contractor is the willingness to tell a homeowner when repair is the right answer and when it is not, and to back that assessment with the technical knowledge to tell the difference. Our technicians have worked on Andersen, Marvin, and Pella wood systems from the 1960s through today, on historic properties in Greenwich and New Canaan where original windows must be preserved, and on straightforward rot and glazing repairs across the full Fairfield County and Westchester service area. The estimate is free, the assessment is honest, and the scope is never inflated. Call 203.948.4777.

The Value of Original Wood Windows

Many of the original wood windows found throughout Connecticut were built during an era when window manufacturers relied on dense, slow-grown lumber that is rarely used in modern production. These materials developed tighter grain patterns, greater stability, and stronger resistance to long-term movement than many contemporary alternatives. That is one reason homeowners are often surprised to learn that windows installed decades ago can still be restored rather than replaced.
Another factor behind their longevity is how they were designed. Traditional wood windows were built to be maintained over time. Individual components can often be serviced, adjusted, or restored without removing the entire unit. Homeowners who choose to restore damaged window sashes or improve draft protection with new weatherstripping are frequently able to extend the life of their windows while preserving the original appearance of the home.

Original wood windows also contribute to architectural authenticity. The profile of a muntin, the depth of a sash, and the proportions of a frame all influence how a home looks from both the interior and exterior. In many historic and custom-built homes throughout Fairfield County and Westchester, preserving these details helps maintain the character that makes the property unique. Modern replacement units often struggle to replicate the craftsmanship and visual balance found in older window systems.

Performance improvements can often be achieved without sacrificing that character. In many cases, homeowners can replace failed insulated glass while preserving the original frame or repair deteriorated glazing without replacing the sash. This approach allows the window to retain its original appearance while addressing common issues associated with aging glass and weather exposure.

For many homeowners, the value of original wood windows goes beyond aesthetics alone. Well-maintained wood windows remain one of the few building components that can continue performing for generations when properly restored. Their durability, repairability, and timeless design make them an asset worth preserving rather than replacing whenever practical.

Window Brands We Service in Westchester County

Homes throughout Fairfield County and Westchester County feature a wide range of window manufacturers, each with its own hardware systems, sash designs, glazing methods, and replacement part requirements. Over the years, our team has worked on everything from historic wood windows to modern premium window systems, allowing us to diagnose brand-specific issues and recommend appropriate repair solutions.
Many homeowners contact us when they experience problems with Andersen windows, particularly older wood-clad models that may develop sash, hardware, or insulated glass issues after years of exposure to Connecticut's seasonal weather conditions. We also regularly service Pella windows, including casement, double-hung, and specialty units that require manufacturer-specific knowledge to repair properly.

In higher-end homes throughout communities such as Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, Rye, and Scarsdale, we frequently encounter Marvin windows, known for their custom configurations and architectural detailing. Our technicians also work with Kolbe windows, Eagle windows, and other premium wood window systems commonly found in luxury residential properties throughout the region.

Because many window issues originate from brand-specific hardware, balances, operators, or glazing systems, understanding how each manufacturer designed its products is often the key to a successful repair. Whether your home contains Andersen, Pella, Marvin, Kolbe, Eagle, or another major manufacturer, our goal is to preserve the existing window whenever practical and avoid unnecessary replacement.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Can a wood window with severe corner rot be repaired without replacing the whole window?
In most cases yes, provided the rot is structurally localized. We probe every section of the frame at the estimate visit. If the rot is confined to one or two areas and the rest of the frame is sound, repair is the correct scope.
How do I know if my wood window needs reglazing or a full glass replacement?
If the glass is intact and the issue is cracked, pulling, or missing glazing compound around the glass perimeter, reglazing is the correct repair. The glass stays in place and new compound is applied.
Why do my wood windows in CT get stuck every summer but work fine in winter?
Wood absorbs atmospheric moisture and expands. Fairfield County's summer humidity, consistently elevated from June through August, causes wood sashes to swell into their frames and bind against the stops. The correct fix is planing or adjusting the sash to restore operating clearance, then sealing the exposed wood
Do you repair Andersen and Marvin wood windows in Connecticut?
Yes. Andersen and Marvin wood and clad-wood units from the 1960s through the 2000s are among the most common systems we service across Fairfield County and Westchester. Hardware and mechanism components for older units require sourcing knowledge specific to each product line. We carry parts for the most common configurations and can source others.
Are you able to repair wood windows in historic Greenwich or Westchester properties?
Yes. Our historic window and door restoration service covers preservation-standard repair work appropriate for listed and deed-restricted properties.
