Had window sills replaced as well as the bottom of my slider replaced which had rotted away after forty years. The work was completed just before the nor’easter and they came through with flying colors! They look just like our other window sills which did not require replacement and our slider works like new and all for a fraction of the price to replace. Very pleased with the work done!

This service was outstanding! The technician who came into the house was highly skilled and polite. He took his shoes off before entering the house. He replaced the window with very minimal use of tools. There was no hammering. No mess. He sealed the new window very carefully. He dust-busted afterwards to make sure there was no dust or debris left. He and the tech on the outside of the house took time to clean the new window so there were no labels or smudges of any kind. Another service quoted me a price that was 20% higher and said that they would have to knock out the entire bay window. Prestige replaced only the section that needed new glass, which was very quick and painless. Took 30 mins for the whole process. I would give them 10 stars!

Window Glass Replacement in New Canaan, CT

The before photo shows a white wood-framed double-hung window photographed from inside in winter. Both sashes are fogged solid — heavy iridescent mineral contamination covering the full glass face of each pane, the view through them reduced to a faint outline of snow and fence outside. The wood frame is sound. The paint is intact. The sash hardware functions. Nothing about this window needed replacing except the glass, and that is precisely what the after photo shows: the same white wood frame, both sashes clear, the outside world fully visible again.

We have been serving New Canaan and Fairfield County since 2014, holding Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor License HIC.070717. Wood-framed double-hung windows are the most common window type in New Canaan’s colonial and traditional housing stock, and fogged IGU replacement in these units is one of the most frequently misquoted jobs in the area. The frame is original, solid, and worth keeping. The glass is the only component that failed, and it is the only component that needs to change.

What Actually Causes Sashes to Fog

When a homeowner calls about a fogged window in New Canaan and both sashes have failed simultaneously, it is almost never coincidence. The upper and lower sashes of a double-hung window live in identical conditions: same solar exposure, same interior humidity, same thermal cycling from Connecticut winters to humid Fairfield County summers. Their IGU edge seals degrade at the same rate. When one crosses the threshold into visible fogging, the other is usually within one or two seasons of the same point.

New Canaan’s wooded character accelerates this timeline compared to more open Fairfield County communities. The town’s dense tree canopy along residential streets and the moisture-retaining character of wooded lots around the Noroton River corridor keep ambient humidity elevated around window frames for extended periods after rain. That persistent moisture exposure loads IGU perimeter seals continuously in a way that a sunnier, drier elevation does not. As our window technician Andrew states, a wood-framed double-hung on a shaded north-facing wall in a New Canaan colonial can reach dual-sash seal failure five to seven years earlier than the same window on a south-facing elevation of the same house, simply because the shaded face never fully dries between rain events.

The iridescent banding pattern visible in the before photo is a specific indicator of how long the seals have been failing. Mineral compounds from atmospheric moisture condense on the inner glass faces and build up in layers over time. Thin iridescence means recent failure. Dense banded iridescence like this means the seals have been compromised for multiple seasons. It is not a different failure type — it is the same IGU seal failure at a more advanced stage.

Wood Window IGU Replacement: What You Should Know

Replacing a fogged IGU in a wood-framed double-hung window is not the same process as replacing one in a vinyl or aluminum frame, and the differences matter for how long the replacement glass lasts.

Wood frames expand and contract seasonally with moisture and temperature changes. A correctly installed IGU in a wood sash accounts for that movement by leaving sufficient clearance between the glass edge and the frame channel, and by using a glazing tape that accommodates the micro-movement without transmitting stress to the IGU edge seal. Install a glass unit cut too tight for the channel, or seat it with a rigid tape that does not flex with the wood, and the frame movement transfers directly to the seal perimeter. That accelerates the new seal’s degradation timeline substantially.

Wood sash glazing also involves the condition of the existing stop beads and the glazing compound or tape channel inside the sash frame. On older colonial wood windows in New Canaan, the interior glazing channel often has residue from previous installations — old tape adhesive, hardened compound, or paint that has built up over multiple repaints. That residue affects how the new IGU seats and seals. We clean the channel back to bare wood before the new unit goes in, which is the step that determines whether the replacement lasts 15 years or starts showing edge stress within three.

Our glass cutting capability means every replacement pane is cut to the exact measured dimensions of the sash opening, accounting for the clearance the wood frame requires rather than sourcing a nearest-standard-size unit. For New Canaan colonials where Andersen or Marvin wood double-hungs have non-standard glass dimensions from their manufacturing era, that in-house cutting is what makes the correct replacement possible at all.

What Else Gets Checked on a Wood Double-Hung Glass Replacement Visit

A wood double-hung window that has had fogged glass for multiple seasons is a window that has been rarely or never opened during that period. Sashes that sit in one position for years develop issues that only surface when the window is returned to normal operation after glass replacement. The two most common are balance system fatigue and paint bond failure at the sash-to-stop contact point.

Balance systems on wood double-hungs, whether spiral balances, channel balances, or the older sash cord and pulley systems found in New Canaan’s pre-war colonials, are designed to be used regularly. A sash that has not moved in two or three years may have a balance that no longer holds the sash weight correctly, causing the sash to drop after the new glass is installed and the window is opened for the first time. Our window and door mechanism repair service covers balance assessment and replacement on the same visit where needed.

Paint bond failure at the sash-to-stop contact is the other issue. On a sash that has been painted shut through multiple exterior repaints while fogged, freeing the sash without damaging the stop bead or the sash face requires scoring the paint bond carefully before the sash is moved. Forcing a painted-shut sash risks cracking the paint film on both the sash and the stop, creating moisture entry points that will accelerate wood deterioration at exactly the point where the sash contacts the frame. We address painted-shut sashes as standard practice on any wood double-hung glass replacement where the sash has not been operated recently. For related wood window repair needs identified on the same visit, including sill or frame deterioration, we assess and quote those in a single estimate.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Why do both window panes fog at the same time in New Canaan, CT?
Both sashes sit in identical conditions, so their seals degrade together. In New Canaan’s shaded, wooded lots the process runs faster than in open suburban settings. When one goes, the other usually follows within a season or two.
Can fogged window glass be cleaned from the outside?
No. The contamination is sealed between the two panes. No cleaning product reaches it. The glass unit needs replacing.
Do I need to replace the whole window or just the glass?
Just the glass. The frame stays in place throughout. We remove the failed IGU, install a new correctly specified unit, and the window is done.
Why is there still condensation at my window frame after glass replacement?
Aluminum frames conduct cold directly. That edge condensation is a frame characteristic, not a glass failure. New glass fixes the fogging between panes — frame-edge condensation in winter is separate.
Do you replace fogged window glass across Fairfield County, CT?
Yes. New Canaan, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk and surrounding towns. 10-year warranty on every IGU. CT License HIC.070717. Call 203.948.4777.
