This was my first time using Prestige. I noticed their truck on the road and there was enough info as to what they do printed on the truck to satisfy what was looking for. I called and they sent a very nice gentleman (owner) and we discussed my repair job and came to a reasonable price. Was told 2- 4 weeks and they were ready within that promised time. They called and we agreed to a time and day to do the job. Their men were very respectful of my house and property and did the job quickly and neatly to my 100% satisfaction. I definitely will call them again for my window and door work in the future!

Rotten Window Repair in Tarrytown, NY

What makes this Tarrytown job distinctive is the angle the before photo was taken from: inside the room, looking down at the sill. The split, collapsed wood is fully visible from the interior – dark, fibrous, completely structurally failed. The glass above it is clear. The frame around it is intact. This is not a failing window. This is a failing sill, and those are two entirely different problems.

Prestige Window and Door Repair has been serving Tarrytown and Westchester County since 2014. With over 10 years of rotten window repair across the area, sill collapse on upper-floor windows is a pattern we see consistently in Tarrytown’s older residential stock – particularly on south and west-facing exposures where direct sun accelerates the breakdown of any paint or sealant protecting the sill face.

The after photo shows the same window with the sill fully rebuilt: white, solid, correctly profiled, and integrated cleanly with the surrounding frame. The view through the glass is identical. Nothing above the sill line was touched.

Why Window Sills Rot From the Inside Out in Tarrytown, NY

Most homeowners notice sill rot from the outside first – peeling paint, soft spots when pressed, visible checking along the grain. What this Tarrytown project shows is what happens when that exterior warning is missed long enough: the rot works inward through the sill thickness until the interior face begins to collapse.

Tarrytown sits along the Hudson River corridor where humidity levels run measurably higher than inland Westchester locations. River-adjacent homes experience frequent condensation cycles on window sills, particularly on upper floors where temperature differentials between the heated interior and the cold exterior glass face are most pronounced. Once moisture establishes a path into the sill end grain – through a failed paint edge, a cracked sealant joint, or a damaged drip edge – deterioration accelerates rapidly. The sill in this project had reached the point where the wood fiber lost all cohesion and split apart under its own weight.

How Prestige Window and Door Repair Rebuilt This Tarrytown Window Sill

Sill repair at this level of deterioration starts with full material removal. There is no consolidating a sill that has lost structural integrity through the full depth – the failed wood comes out completely, back to sound material at every edge. Borate fungicide treatment was applied to the surrounding frame sections before the rebuild began to stop residual fungal activity from migrating into the new material.

The sill was rebuilt using rot-resistant timber shaped to match the original profile, bonded with marine-grade epoxy, and mechanically fastened to the frame. Exterior edges were primed with penetrating oil-based primer before the topcoat was applied. The window recaulking at every joint where the rebuilt sill meets the surrounding frame was completed as part of the same job – a correctly sealed sill joint is what prevents the next rot cycle from starting at the same location.

Rotten Window Sill Repair vs. Full Window Replacement

A collapsed sill does not mean a failed window. The sash, glass, frame, and hardware on this Tarrytown window were all functioning correctly throughout. Replacing the entire window unit because the sill has rotted is the wrong call in the significant majority of cases where damage is structurally localized. We probe every section at the estimate visit and give a straight answer.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Does a rotted window sill mean the whole window needs replacing?
No. A deteriorated sill is one component of the window assembly. If the sash, glass, and frame are structurally sound, sill repair is the correct and far less expensive scope.
Why do window sills rot from the inside in Tarrytown homes?
Hudson River corridor humidity is higher than inland Westchester. Upper-floor sills experience the steepest interior-exterior temperature differentials, generating frequent condensation at the sill face. Once moisture enters end grain through any failed seal, it progresses inward rapidly.
What is the correct repair method for a fully collapsed window sill?
Full removal to sound wood, borate fungicide treatment, rebuild with rot-resistant timber and marine-grade epoxy, then correct priming and sealing of every joint. Consolidants and surface fillers are not adequate for structural sill failure of this severity.
How long does a rebuilt window sill last in Westchester County?
With correct preparation and a properly sealed perimeter, a rebuilt sill outlasts the original by a significant margin. The original failed because the finish and sealant system was not maintained. The rebuilt sill starts from a higher baseline.
Do you repair rotted window sills across Westchester County?
Yes. Tarrytown, Scarsdale, Hawthorne, Harrison, and the surrounding area. Free on-site estimate, same-week scheduling in most cases. Call 203.948.4777.
