This was my first time using Prestige. I noticed their truck on the road and there was enough info as to what they do printed on the truck to satisfy what was looking for. I called and they sent a very nice gentleman (owner) and we discussed my repair job and came to a reasonable price. Was told 2- 4 weeks and they were ready within that promised time. They called and we agreed to a time and day to do the job. Their men were very respectful of my house and property and did the job quickly and neatly to my 100% satisfaction. I definitely will call them again for my window and door work in the future!

Rotten Window Repair in Pocantico Hills, NY

The sash in the before photo was removed and laid flat for assessment — a standard aluminum-clad wood sash, screen intact, glass undamaged. What the photo shows at the bottom is total structural failure: the entire lower rail has rotted through, wood fiber completely gone, the corner joint collapsed, the aluminum cladding separating from nothing underneath it. From the outside this window looks like a replacement job. It is not. The glass is sound, the upper frame sections are intact, and the rot is confined entirely to the bottom rail. The correct scope is bottom rail rebuild — not a new window.

Prestige Window and Door Repair has been serving Pocantico Hills and Westchester County since 2014. With over 10 years of rotten window repair across the area, bottom rail rot on aluminum-clad sashes is one of the most common repair scopes we handle — and one of the most frequently misdiagnosed as a full replacement situation by contractors who don’t specialize in wood window repair.

The after photo shows the same sash with the bottom rail fully rebuilt: clean white finish, solid geometry at the corner, the screen frame seated correctly. The window reinstalls into its original opening and operates exactly as before. Nothing changed except the rail that was failing.

Window Sash Bottom Rail Rot in Pocantico Hills, NY — Why This Specific Location Fails

The bottom rail of a window sash is the most rot-vulnerable section in any wood window — more so than corner joints, more so than sill faces. It sits directly above the sill, collects any water that runs down the glass face, and in an aluminum-clad sash it sits inside a metal channel that traps moisture against the wood rather than allowing it to drain and dry. Once the factory sealant at the cladding-to-wood junction fails — which it does in all aluminum-clad windows after enough years of thermal cycling — the wood underneath begins absorbing water with every rain event.

Pocantico Hills homes, set within the Rockefeller State Park Preserve corridor in the northeastern Greenburgh area, are heavily shaded by mature trees. Shaded windows dry slowly after rain. North and east-facing sashes in particular can remain damp for extended periods, providing exactly the sustained moisture exposure that accelerates rot progression in trapped wood sections. The bottom rail of an aluminum-clad sash in this environment can go from minor checking to complete structural failure within three to five years of the first seal failure — which is precisely what happened in this Pocantico Hills project.

How Prestige Window and Door Repair Rebuilt This Pocantico Hills Window Sash

The sash was removed from the window opening and worked on at ground level. All rotted material was removed back to sound wood. The aluminum cladding at the bottom rail was carefully separated, cleaned, and set aside for reuse. The deteriorated wood core was fully excavated — no consolidants, no partial cuts — and the bottom rail was rebuilt using a combination of correctly dimensioned replacement timber and two-part epoxy filler at the integration points. The corner joint was re-formed, the new rail section was bonded and mechanically fastened to the surviving stile sections, and the aluminum cladding was refitted over the rebuilt rail and sealed.

The screen frame was inspected and confirmed sound throughout. The sash was reinstalled, the window’s operation verified, and the perimeter caulk between the sash and surrounding frame was refreshed to prevent moisture re-entry at the rebuilt section.

Rotten Sash Repair vs. Window Replacement — The Assessment That Matters

A bottom rail failure like this Pocantico Hills sash — severe at the rail, clean everywhere else — is straightforwardly a repair job. The assessment changes when rot has spread into the stiles, when the sill beneath the sash is also compromised, or when multiple sashes in the same unit show the same pattern. In those cases the economics shift toward replacement. We probe every section at the estimate visit and give a straight answer. For older Westchester properties where original wood window restoration is preferable to replacement, repair is viable in the majority of cases where damage looks severe but is structurally localized.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Can a completely rotted window sash bottom rail be repaired without replacing the whole window?
Yes — this Pocantico Hills project is a direct example. When the rot is confined to the bottom rail and the rest of the sash is structurally sound, a targeted rail rebuild is the correct scope. We remove all deteriorated material, rebuild the rail correctly, refit the existing cladding, and reinstall the sash. The window operates normally afterwards.
Why does the bottom rail of an aluminum-clad window rot faster than the rest of the sash?
The bottom rail sits inside a metal channel at the base of the sash that traps moisture against the wood. Once the factory sealant at the cladding-to-wood junction fails, every rain event delivers water directly to the trapped wood end grain. End grain absorbs moisture many times faster than face grain, and shaded Westchester locations like Pocantico Hills dry slowly after rain — compounding the deterioration rate significantly.
How do I know if my rotted sash needs repair or full window replacement?
It depends on how far the rot has spread. Bottom rail only — repair. Rot into the stiles, multiple sashes, or the sill beneath also compromised — the economics shift toward replacement. We probe every section at the free estimate visit and give you a direct recommendation either way.
How long does a rebuilt window sash bottom rail last in Westchester County?
With correct preparation — full rot removal, borate treatment, proper rebuild, cladding correctly resealed — a rebuilt bottom rail on an otherwise sound sash should last 10+ years. The critical factor is resealing the cladding-to-wood junction so moisture can't re-enter the rebuilt section after the repair.
