This was my first time using Prestige. I noticed their truck on the road and there was enough info as to what they do printed on the truck to satisfy what was looking for. I called and they sent a very nice gentleman (owner) and we discussed my repair job and came to a reasonable price. Was told 2- 4 weeks and they were ready within that promised time. They called and we agreed to a time and day to do the job. Their men were very respectful of my house and property and did the job quickly and neatly to my 100% satisfaction. I definitely will call them again for my window and door work in the future!

Dog Door Installation in Darien, CT

When a Darien homeowner needed backyard access for their dog through a white divided-light French door leading to the rear deck, the answer wasn’t a new door or a wall cutout. It was a properly installed pet door, cut directly into the lower glass panel — sealed for Fairfield County winters, flush with the existing grid pattern, and completely non-destructive to the original door frame and hardware.

Prestige Window and Door Repair has been serving Darien and the wider Fairfield County and Westchester area since 2014. With over 10 years of hands-on glass and door work in this market, dog door installation in glass doors is a job we handle correctly from assessment through finish — not a general carpentry job, but a glass-specialist installation that preserves the door’s integrity and thermal performance.

The before photo shows the French door as it was: clean, intact, no pet access. The after photo shows the completed pet door unit sitting in the lower panel of the right-hand door leaf, integrated neatly into the divided-light grid. It looks like it was built that way.

How Dog Door Installation in a French Glass Door Works

A divided-light French door has individual glass panes set within a frame grid. The lower panel — closest to the floor — is the correct location for pet door installation: right height for a medium-to-large dog, smallest pane in the door so structural impact is minimal, and clear of all locking hardware and hinges.

The installation process at Prestige Window and Door Repair starts with measuring the dog — shoulder height and chest width — and confirming the glass type in the existing panel. Many Darien homes built or renovated in the past two decades use double-pane glass even in French doors leading to covered decks, so the replacement panel has to be specified to match the original glazing. The old panel is removed cleanly, the frame channel is prepared, and the new assembly — pet door unit integrated into a correctly specified replacement panel — is installed as a complete unit. The door’s swing, latch, and weatherstrip contact are verified before the job closes.

This is not a sliding door insert. It is not a flap cut through a solid door skin. It is glass work — and it needs to be treated as such.

Pet Door Installation in Darien, CT — Why The Double-Flap Seal Matters

Fairfield County winters regularly drop below freezing from December through February. A single-flap pet door on an exterior glass door in Darien is a permanent draft source. The unit installed in this project uses a double-flap weatherseal: outer flap closes against the weather, inner flap closes against the conditioned interior, air gap between them acts as a thermal buffer. It won’t match the original glass panel’s R-value at that pane — nothing will — but it is the correct specification for this climate and performs dramatically better than leaving a door cracked open, which is what most Darien homeowners are doing before they call us.

The perimeter seal between the new panel and the French door frame was refreshed using the same approach applied in our window recaulking work — every exposed joint sealed properly, not just enough to hold the unit in place.

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

How much does dog door installation in a glass door cost in Darien, CT?
Cost depends on the glass type in the existing panel, the size of the pet door unit required, and the door configuration. Double-pane panels cost more to replace than single-pane. We give exact pricing at the free on-site estimate — we don't quote glass jobs by phone because the variables matter too much to guess. Call 203.948.4777 to schedule.
Can a pet door be installed in a French door without replacing the entire door?
Yes — and this Darien project is proof. Only the one lower glass panel is replaced. The French door frame, all other panes, and all hardware stay exactly as they are. The door works identically after installation.
How do I know what size dog door I need for my breed?
Flap opening should be wide enough for the dog to pass through without squeezing and tall enough to avoid uncomfortable crouching. We measure shoulder height and chest width at the estimate visit and specify the unit correctly. Most medium-to-large breeds in Fairfield County homes land in a large or extra-large flap size.
Will a dog door installed in glass cause drafts or raise my heating bill in Connecticut?
A properly installed double-flap unit reduces heat loss significantly compared to cracking a door open — which is the real comparison for most pet owners. Single-flap units are not the right specification for Connecticut exterior applications and we don't install them that way. The thermal impact of one lower panel is minimal on the home's overall heating load.
Do you install dog doors in sliding glass doors or only French doors?
We handle both — sliding door applications use a different approach (an insert panel that fits into the track alongside the existing slider). The French door installation shown here is a glass-panel replacement method. We assess the door type at the estimate visit and recommend the correct approach. See our full dog door installation service page for more on both methods.
How long does a pet door installation in a glass door take?
For a standard French door lower panel replacement like this Darien job, the installation is typically completed in a single visit of a few hours. Scheduling depends on glass sourcing for the replacement panel — we confirm the timeline at the estimate.
